Afton approves facility use MOU with school district; OKs community event funding and explores office space for arts council

The Afton Town Council on Feb. 9 approved an MOU with Lincoln County School District #2 to provide reciprocal open use of town facilities and school gym space for youth programs and, by amendment, adult leagues.

Why it matters: The agreement formalizes shared use of public facilities at no rent in exchange for gym access, which affects availability for youth and adult recreation programs and clarifies a town-school cooperative arrangement.

Mayor Joel Neuenschwander presented the memorandum of understanding. Councilman Jason C. Inskeep excused himself from the discussion citing a potential conflict of interest. Councilman Jerry Hansen moved to approve the agreement with the amendment that adult leagues be included at no charge; Councilman Rick Merritt seconded the motion. Because Inskeep was excused, Mayor Neuenschwander cast a vote in favor and the motion carried.

The Council also heard from TJ Jenkins, who described the men's basketball program and said the school district is charging the organizers for gym use; the Council agreed to research that funding request and report back. Kevan Kennington of the Star Valley Arts Council asked the Town to consider contributing funds and was told the Council would investigate offering office space at the Afton Civic Center in lieu of a cash donation; Councilman Hansen moved to investigate this option and the motion carried. Sierra Mitchell of the Star Valley Samaritans requested $1,000 to help coordinate the Color Me Crazy 5K with the Afton Summer Craze events; Councilman Inskeep moved to approve $1,000 and coordinate the event, Councilman Hansen seconded, and the motion carried.

These actions set expectations for further follow-up rather than immediate appropriations beyond the $1,000 approved for the Samaritans.
