Martin County honors longtime County Attorney and commemorates burned Cypress Grill with local artist’s print

The Martin County Board of Commissioners adopted a Resolution of Appreciation for County Attorney J. Melvin Bowen, who began serving as county attorney in 1995 and was recognized for professional service by current and former employees and managers. The resolution was read aloud and approved by unanimous vote; Bowen thanked the board and said he plans to continue some private practice work.

Separately, DSS Director Letecia Loadholt and Sheriff’s Office representatives recognized volunteers and staff who helped operate an emergency hurricane shelter at Riverside Middle School during Hurricane Florence; a certificate was presented to youth volunteer Jabrian Spruill. County Manager David Bone also presented background on the Cypress Grill, a Jamesville restaurant and cultural landmark destroyed by fire in July 2018. To commemorate the Grill’s local history, the county purchased a pen‑and‑ink print by Bailey Phelps and presented copies to former operators and owners. Commissioners offered remarks of appreciation to the honorees.
