Board approves fence variance for Skinner family at 1312 Avenue N

The Carter Lake City Board of Adjustments unanimously approved a request on Thursday from a Skinner family representative for a fence variance at 1312 Avenue N.

The applicant asked to install a six-foot wooden fence from the backyard to the front edge of the garage, then continue from the front of the garage to the property line at four feet. The applicant said the change is intended to increase privacy and noted existing neighboring fences and a neighbor’s roaming dog as reasons for the request.

Board members asked whether the proposed fence would impede sight lines for vehicles and confirmed the applicant understands the property-line location. A clerk and other members noted a six-foot fence is typically allowed in rear yards but that extending six feet closer to the front of the house requires a variance; the board agreed the four-foot portion to the property line was standard.
