Executive committee finalizes July 14 agenda, schedules fuller follow-up on Ivana report and forwards committee roles memo to full commission

The Columbia River Gorge Commission executive committee agreed to finalize a draft July 14 commission agenda and to create space at that meeting for a fuller commissioner discussion of recommendations from the Ivana report. Christina, the commission’s executive director, told the committee she would “share the screen” and had prepared a short, three-meeting roadmap staff recommends for upcoming commission sessions.

Why it matters: committee members said they wanted the full commission to see what standing committees had already done with the Ivana recommendations so commissioners could focus discussion on unresolved issues rather than reopen items already considered by committees.

Christina said the proposed July meeting would include the executive director’s report, the standing committee reports and a rulemaking hearing Jeff will present, and she recommended commissioners review materials in advance. Chair Alex Johnson and other members agreed to place commissioner discussion of the Ivana recommendations after committee presentations so committee reports could inform the conversation.

Commissioner Roger Nichols argued for more open time for commissioners to interact. “I want a little time…we don’t get a chance since we are a large body,” Nichols said, noting that some back-and-forth was needed for commissioners to understand one another. Other commissioners urged a balance: allow some unstructured interaction but set time limits and a framework to keep the discussion productive.

The committee reviewed a new roles-and-responsibilities memo that clarifies standing committees’ purposes, membership and staff support. The executive committee agreed to “slap a date on there and take the draft off” and forward the memo as part of the full commission materials rather than treating it as a large discussion item at the July meeting. Commissioners also agreed to add Commissioner Nichols to the membership for the economic vitality committee and to use the executive committee as a place to filter and prioritize agenda items before they go to the full commission.

No formal votes were recorded during this executive-committee meeting; the group reached consensus to finalize materials for distribution and to reserve targeted time on the July 14 agenda for Ivana-report follow-up.
