Shelbyville approves right-of-way purchases for river overlook and Greenway project

Shelbyville City Council approved three right-of-way acquisitions needed to finish the river overlook and Greenway trail project.

Staff summarized the parcels and costs: the purchase from Marshall Lynn Crow is $32,000; the Tate/Binkley property required two transactions — $12,303 for one portion and $25,000 for the remainder — for a total of $37,303 for that parcel. Council members confirmed the purchases are part of the TAP (Transportation Alternatives Program) project but that land acquisition costs are city-funded; the TAP grant will pay for construction, not property acquisition.

A motion to approve all three right-of-way purchases passed on roll call. Staff said the next project steps are state approval for the TAP grant, bid and construction scheduling, and anticipated construction later in the year pending approvals.

Next steps: Staff will complete the acquisitions and proceed with grant-related approvals and bidding for construction; councilmembers indicated the riverwalk and overlook will improve public access once completed.
