Council tables two condemnations, orders demolition of one property

The Tuscaloosa City Council on routine agenda action on several condemned properties on the docket, tabling two demolition orders and approving one demolition.

Clerk introduced a condemnation for 14218 Court East citing 46 housing-code violations. Mr. Williams presented the case and Ivy Goodell, speaking on behalf of owner Mary Dykes, said they needed an additional 90 days to continue repairs. The council moved, seconded and voted to table the demolition for 90 days.

A second condemnation for 641431st Street, with 45 housing-code violations, was similarly presented; staff reported the owner was not present and the council voted to table that demolition for 90 days on the staff recommendation.

For 2918 26th Street (condemned March 25, 2026, with 48 housing-code violations), staff reported no work had been done and no owner representative appeared. After the public-hearing prompt and no speakers, the council voted to order demolition.

Separately, the council set the cost of demolition for the structure at 3000627 Street and authorized filing a lien to recover demolition costs. All motions were moved, seconded and approved on recorded roll-call responses recorded in the meeting transcript.

The council did not discuss appeals or specific timelines for post-demolition actions during the meeting; staff will carry out the ordered demolitions and related lien filings.
