Resident asks council to reconsider Springbrook incentive package, presents petition and social-media feedback

At the citizens-comment portion of the meeting, Joan Bar (5541 Woodbury Lane) asked the Tuscaloosa City Council to reconsider the tax-incentive package approved for Delany Property Group’s Springbrook Circle project.

Bar said she handed council members a petition and presented counts: 178 signatures on June 16 and 229 on June 29, of which she said 125 were from Tuscaloosa and a total of 200 from the state of Alabama (her packet included ZIP-code breakdowns). She also presented a color-coded compilation of Facebook comments and said more than half were negative; she identified recurring concerns that incentives reward property owners who allowed properties to fall into disrepair and argued that the project sets low benchmarks and asks little in return for existing Springbrook residents.

Bar asked the council to use its six-month reconsideration window in the rules and procedures to revisit the incentive decision or, if the project proceeds, to require stronger neighborhood-compatibility standards and more meaningful returns to residents. She referenced precedent in other projects where developers were asked to alter design for compatibility and suggested planning and zoning could help enforce such standards.

Council did not take action on the request during the meeting; Bar concluded her remarks and the council moved on to other agenda items.
