Groveport Madison Board weighs attendance and graduation-policy changes, discusses interventions system and moves into executive session

The Groveport Madison Board of Education met in special session June 30, 2026, to review proposed edits to student attendance and graduation policies, consider an interventions operating system and to consult in executive session on personnel and pending legal matters.

Board members and staff spent much of the public portion of the meeting clarifying draft language. Staff explained procedural safeguards for district-held credit cards and receipt verification connected to policy item #10, and described how optional credits can serve as an alternate graduation pathway for students who cannot pass standardized testing. On military service, the board discussed drafting language to treat verified military participation as a "verified absence" and to ensure such absences are excused and counted toward a student's graduation pathway.

Members also debated wording to address absences tied to student homelessness. One board member urged caution about creating a "slippery slope" and proposed language that ties determinations to the district or "other appropriate school," saying that approach would preserve federal protections while providing local oversight. The board accepted that drafting direction and indicated the district liaison or school should play a role in verification.

Staff briefed the board on plans for an interventions operating system that would host student surveys, interventions and data collection. Staff said a redline of policy language would be drafted and sent to the district's contractor for review and that the board would revisit cost and required hours at an upcoming July meeting (staff referenced July 14 as a target for follow-up). Participants noted the system could reduce costs compared with building in-house tools and would centralize screening and intervention data.

Late in the meeting, a motion was made to enter executive session "pursuant to Ohio Revised Code 121.22(G)(1) to consider the appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion or compensation of a public employee or official, and pursuant to 121.22(G)(3) to confer with legal counsel regarding pending or imminent court action." The board took roll call and entered executive session at about 7:09 p.m. The board later reconvened, reported no public action, moved to adjourn and completed a final roll call (a time of about 9:10 was recorded in the transcript).
