Residents say Bowie community garden program boosts food access, skills and neighborhood ties

A City of Bowie staff member described the community garden program as an opportunity for city residents to rent plots for flowers and vegetables and to learn gardening skills. The staff member said the program began in 2022 from an existing food pantry garden, started with a single site and expanded to a second garden after high demand.

"The community garden program is an opportunity for residents to rent a plot and be able to plant, whether it's flowers, vegetables, throughout the year," said a City of Bowie staff member. The staff member said the first garden drew immediate interest and that "they had 11 people on the waitlist," prompting the city to add a second site the following year.

City staff outlined participant responsibilities: any Bowie resident who lives within the municipal limits may rent a plot, and plot holders must maintain their plot and the adjacent walkways and participate in at least three community workdays each year. Staff also said gardeners may grow almost anything except controlled substances and invasive plants.

Several residents who use the plots described practical benefits. One participant said the garden was the right answer after moving to a house with a wooded backyard, and another said they started with one plot about four years ago and later took a second because backyard gardening proved difficult. "It's reduced my grocery bill. I've also gotten lots of fresh air, exercise. For me, it's stress relief," one resident said, describing both financial and well‑being advantages.

Speakers emphasized social benefits as well, saying the garden provides a place for neighbors to meet and for less experienced gardeners to learn from more seasoned participants. "The people here are so nice and helpful," a resident said, adding that volunteers play a critical role in keeping plots and common areas maintained.
