Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors approves routine measures, hears road department update

The Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors met June 29, 2026, approved routine agenda items including claims and a fireworks permit, and received an update from county road staff on ongoing projects and traffic-sign compliance.

The meeting opened with the chair asking for approval of the agenda and minutes; a motion and second carried by voice vote. The board then approved presented claims and noted there was no payroll to report.

During a public-works report, a county staff speaker said a large hole had been found and "appears to be a tile break," and recommended assigning the county watchman to investigate. The board moved to have the watchman investigate "as presented," the motion was seconded and carried.

The board approved items four and five on the agenda related to the annual budget and grant funding for the Missouri and Swale sanitary districts. The board also approved a fireworks permit for a display by "flashing fun," after certifications for insurance were confirmed.

Brandon, a county staff member, delivered an extended roads report. He said the county garage was closed for three days to replace damaged wooden triple-box components with 3D tubes, and that the facility has reopened. "We're going to leave it gravel for the summer until the fall and patch it back to asphalt before the winter time," Brandon said, adding that crews would revisit full project settlement next year if needed.

Brandon said crews and the city swept Southshore and will sweep again in July. To limit holiday traffic on a problem roadway, he said the county plans a temporary closure for the Fourth of July weekend. He also reported that two patrol trucks that had been out of service were repaired and returned to service, while one mower was experiencing overheating and crews would address cooling issues.

On the Rockwell project, Brandon said contractors are on site installing sewer and water extensions; soil remediation had not begun but utilities work should be finished in the near term. A staff speaker said the 'Rush' paving project is unlikely to be completed this year and is expected next spring, though the letting is scheduled in August. A roughly six-mile paving stretch discussed by staff may start near July 13, pending contractor scheduling.

Speakers reported one bridge project likely will be completed next fiscal year when concrete work resumes, and said an internal project remains dependent on permit approvals. Brandon also described checks of speed-zone pre-warning signs and no-passing zones, reporting that pre-warnings were set at 700–1,000 feet and initial reviews indicate compliance with the new 60 mph speed limits; crews will continue switching signage in the coming weeks.
