Hartland managers report on clean-up day, ADU and chicken ordinances, development delays and staffing

During board reports and the Manager's Report on May 19, Hartland Township leaders highlighted several operational and planning items.

Manager Mike Luce said the Large Item Clean Up Day was highly successful, noting partners Dougie's Disposal, San Marino Excavating and Horizon Landscaping supported the event, and staff estimated they filled 19 roll-off dumpsters; the event experienced a brief 15-minute lightning shutdown. Trustees and staff thanked DPW crews.

On planning matters, Luce said the accessory dwelling unit (ADU) ordinance is currently with the Livingston County Planning Commission and will return to the Board after review. He described a proposed revision to the chicken ordinance that would limit poultry to properties of at least 30,000 square feet and noted that homeowner-association bylaws that prohibit poultry would supersede the Township ordinance; the Board asked to discuss the ordinance at a work session and requested staff provide complaint counts and maps showing parcels at or above 30,000 square feet.

Luce also reported the Villas of Hartland site plan last submitted in 2022 or 2023 may need extension or resubmission if it has expired; he said Sheetz and Chick-Fil-A remain delayed by Livingston County Drain Commission engineering review and that he will raise the issue at the next Board of Public Works meeting. Trustee O'Connell said American Aggregate is moving heavy equipment toward a proposed gravel-pit location.

On staffing, Treasurer Horning announced Tax Assistant Denise LeGault started Monday and that Deputy Treasurer Donna Shollack is retiring; Gywn Haaseth will start as Deputy Treasurer on June 1. The Board agreed to add the chicken ordinance and related code-enforcement discussion to a future work session.
