Hartland Planning Commission approves Grumlaw Church addition, places conditions on permit

Hartland Township’s Planning Commission unanimously approved an amendment to the Preliminary Planned Development site plan for Grumlaw Church (SP #26-004) at its March 26, 2026 meeting, authorizing an approximately 5,000-square-foot building addition.

The addition will include three classrooms, a bathroom and storage space, and will not add staff or parking, Chair Fox confirmed. The applicant said the new construction will match existing building materials, continue landscaping along the west side of the building, screen rooftop rooftop units as required, and relocate the existing playground fence to a newly created playground area.

Commissioner Grissim moved “to approve Site Plan Application #26-004, a request to amend the approved Preliminary PD Site Plan for Grumlaw Church, for a proposed building addition, as outlined in the staff memorandum dated March 19, 2026,” and listed conditions. Commissioner Murphy seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.

Approval was conditional. The commission required the applicant to address outstanding items in the Planning Department’s March 19, 2026 memorandum on the Construction Plan Set, subject to administrative review by planning staff prior to issuance of a land use permit. The approval also requires compliance with any requirements from the township engineering consultant, the Department of Public Works director, fire-code requirements and other applicable government agencies.

The applicant on record is Josef Amini, identified in the minutes as the Grumlaw Church campus pastor and the project’s construction manager. The staff memorandum dated March 19, 2026, was referenced as the basis for required corrections and final administrative review.

The commission took no public comment on the item. The regular meeting adjourned at approximately 7:15 p.m.; the commission then reconvened a work session to consider zoning amendments.
