The St. John the Baptist Parish School Board voted on Jan. 19 to install Shawn Wallace as board president and, after several ballots and a brief recess, named Ms. Frizzell vice-president.
Wallace won the presidency unanimously on the first ballot after Ms. Debbie Schum nominated him and the board members announced their votes. "Mr. Shawn Wallace was declared President," the minutes state, and Wallace was seated as chair.
The vice-presidential contest required multiple rounds. Three nominees—Mr. Burl, Ms. Nia Mitchell-Williams and Ms. Frizzell—were placed. Early tallies produced a split that, under board policy requiring a majority of the full board, prompted additional votes and a short recess at 6:19 p.m. The board reconvened at 6:26 p.m.; a subsequent roll call produced a final tally that declared Ms. Frizzell vice-president.
Why it matters: Board leadership determines committee assignments and meeting management for the coming year, affecting how the board advances its agenda and handles items such as contracts and collective bargaining.
The meeting proceeded to regular business after officers were seated, including approval of minutes and votes on procurement and personnel matters. The meeting adjourned at 8:22 p.m.
