Council reviews Cochran Helps proposal to run community resource center at Peyton Williams Center

Cochran City Council on Jan. 8 reviewed a proposal from Cochran Helps to operate a community resource center at the Peyton Williams Center that would offer food distribution, health and wellness resources, and education and employment assistance.

Staff and representatives of Cochran Helps described the partnership as a public–private arrangement under which Cochran Helps would run day-to-day services while the facility would remain available for community events. Council raised questions about oversight, how privacy of clients would be protected and how the city would accommodate any future need for refrigeration or expanded food storage; staff said expanded refrigeration or dedicated food-storage capacity would be accommodated at a separate facility if required. No formal action was taken.

Council members emphasized the need for clear oversight and community engagement plans before approving a partnership arrangement. The discussion also addressed logistics: where intake would occur, how resources would be tracked, and potential volunteer or staffing needs. Council asked staff to continue discussions with Cochran Helps and to return with greater detail on operational responsibilities, privacy safeguards and any facility modifications or storage arrangements.

The proposal drew no formal motion. The next procedural step is for staff to provide the additional information requested by council for consideration at a future meeting.
