Sheriff's Department reports staffing strains, boarding of inmates and detailed transport hours

The Sheriff’s Department delivered a metrics-heavy report covering April through June and year-to-date figures, and flagged staffing constraints in the county jail that have resulted in overtime and at least one boarded inmate.

According to the report, April–June arrests totaled 42, with 80 year to date; the department issued 160 citations April–June (363 YTD). Complaints to investigate were listed as 135 for the quarter (254 YTD). Calls for service were 1,545 in April–June and 2,899 year to date. Bookings numbered 119 for the quarter (254 YTD), and the daily average held in the facility was reported as about 35.

The department provided a detailed breakdown of transport activity, including mental-health transports and mileage and hours associated with those runs. Staff noted transport and warrant-related hours and mileage for the quarter and year to date. The report identified one inmate boarded to Price County for security reasons related to a staff–inmate relationship; earlier in the transcript a boarding to Rice County was also referenced.

Committee members pressed on staffing: the department said female jailer availability is a particular shortfall and that several new hires are still in training, producing temporary overtime. The committee discussed budget implications; committee members were told that under-spent funds on some lines return to the county general fund for later allocation.

No formal action or vote on policy resulted from the report; committee members scheduled a follow-up budget meeting for August 24 to align oversight with county finance deadlines.
