Students praise Garford Elementary; board honors first-grade teacher Jade Chang as Unsung Hero

Student board representatives Cheyenne Lynch and Kandakar Maheen told trustees their November visit to Garford Elementary found a positive building climate, leadership longevity, stronger student-staff relationships and active equity-focused work by teachers. The students said surveys reflected increased student confidence and a sense of connection.

The student report highlighted consistent practices such as PBIS and increased student voice as factors supporting engagement and learning. The students called out district responsiveness to building needs and recent renovations that supported the school's progress.

During the work session Vice President Britney Williams presented the board leadership "Unsung Hero" award to first-grade teacher Jade Chang, describing Chang's dedication, family engagement and humility. Principal Bill Rogers provided a written commendation, saying the district formally acknowledges Chang's professionalism and contributions to students and the school community.

The board also heard a brief musical performance from the Jazz Flex Lab Band earlier in the meeting.
