Committee renames Contentment Road on St. Croix for longtime senator Alicia 'Chucky' Hansen

The Committee on Government Operations, Veterans Affairs and Consumer Protection on June 29 approved and forwarded to Rules an amended bill (36-0213) to rename Contentment Road on St. Croix as Alicia "Chucky" Hansen Lane and appropriate $10,000 for Department of Public Works signage.

Sponsor Hubert L. Frederick said the amendment changes the original proposal (renaming Belvadier Road) to Contentment Road beside the old legislative building to better reflect the family’s preference and the senator’s long service at that site. Elizabeth Hansen Watley, daughter of Alicia "Chucky" Hansen, testified about her mother’s decades of public life and the family’s appreciation for the honor. Several senators and invited speakers recounted Hansen’s advocacy for consumers, veterans and underrepresented residents.

Senators discussed suffix choice (lane, road, boulevard) during debate; the committee adopted Amendment 36-690 to name Contentment Road the Alicia "Chucky" Hansen Lane and to require DPW to erect signage at each end within 90 days. The committee voted unanimously to forward the amended bill to Rules and Judiciary (roll call: seven yays).

What happens next: Rules and Judiciary will complete vetting and any fiscal/technical work before the measure advances for final legislative consideration.
