Highway Safety Committee updates on speed limits and signage; staff notifies Google, awaits sign installations

The Highway Safety Committee on June 30 reviewed recent speed-limit changes and the status of new signage on local roads, saying follow-up is needed before drivers will consistently see the updates in mapping and in-car navigation systems.

At the meeting, the Committee discussed a completed public hearing that recommended reducing the speed limit to 30 mph on Bedford and McCurdy. Staff member (S3) said Benjie was expected to install additional signs and fix a sign that had been placed upside down, and that staff would confirm the work once it is done.

Why it matters: physical signs are the legal notice drivers follow, but digital navigation systems also influence driver behavior. "I informed Google," Staff member (S3) said, noting that the committee’s notification to Google was made but that the company’s verification process was unclear. Committee members also discussed that some in-car devices such as Garmin require periodic manual updates and that townwide speed-sign deployment depends on police speed data.

Staff and members outlined next steps: Benjie and Steve were asked to follow up on sign installation and police speed data collection; Southern New Hampshire Planning Services was reported to be assisting with outreach on speed data. No formal vote was taken on signage at the meeting; the committee agreed to confirm sign placement and then proceed with any required postings.

The committee began the meeting by approving the May 19 minutes and concluded by setting its next meeting for July 21. No timetable for completion of the sign installations was provided at the meeting.
