Mills County approves routine licenses, salary corrections, hires and local event permits

The Mills County Board of Supervisors approved a package of routine administrative items Tuesday, including licenses, salary corrections and local event permissions.

On the consent agenda the board approved meeting minutes, accounts payable and a fireworks permit for a private July 4 event. The board also approved three retail alcohol licenses — a five-day special for Hillsdale Lily Farms, a Class C retail license for Ron Cherro, and a Class C license for Toby Jackson — and accepted a staff explanation and approval of a tobacco permit for a Loves location after the state corrected a jurisdictional processing error.

County staff presented corrections to the FY27 secondary roads step-pay calculations affecting two employees; the board approved the revised non-union salary schedule effective July 1 and asked staff to verify anniversary dates to avoid payroll discrepancies. The board also authorized posting for an engineering technician position with a starting hourly rate of $29.87.

The board approved a proclamation recognizing the United States’ semiquincentennial and authorized the chair to sign it; staff added recognition of a local education group in the text. Supervisors also approved a short street closure to permit a parade tied to Thursday’s fireworks and a related community event; the county engineer and sheriff were asked to coordinate traffic control.

Separately, the board approved extending language on 10-hour shifts with the union through the current collective-bargaining contract (expiration June 30, 2027) after staff clarified the change and confirmed union agreement.

The meeting ended after discussion of other routine business and an update on road projects and nuisance weed complaints.
