Malden School Committee refers kindergarten cut-off and pauses residency policy changes pending subcommittee review

At its Jan. 10 meeting the Malden School Committee unanimously referred a proposed change to the kindergarten enrollment cut-off date to the Policy and Procedures Subcommittee and discussed whether to approve a limited residency-documentation update for upcoming registration booklets.

Mr. Weldai moved to refer the kindergarten enrollment cut-off date to the Policy and Procedures Subcommittee; Ms. Spadafora seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The referral means the subcommittee will review the proposed cut-off timeline and recommend next steps to the full committee.

On residency policy, Mr. Weldai said the proposed changes "refer to the necessary documents needed to determine residency in order to enroll a student" and asked the committee to approve only the documentation section so the documents could be included in registration booklets that are about to be printed. Ms. Spadafora and others said the full policy should be reviewed by the Policy and Procedures Subcommittee; Ms. Spadafora suggested convening the subcommittee quickly so the booklet printing is not delayed. Assistant Superintendent Laryssa Doherty said certain registration steps have become challenging for residents under the current process.

Why it matters: Residency rules determine whether a child is eligible to enroll in the Malden Public Schools; changes can affect family access and require precise guidance in registration materials. Committee members favored subcommittee vetting to ensure changes are complete and do not inadvertently exclude families.

What the committee did: The committee referred the kindergarten cut-off question to the Policy and Procedures Subcommittee and agreed to have the subcommittee review the residency policy before approving broader changes; no final vote on the full residency policy was recorded on Jan. 10.

Next steps: The Policy and Procedures Subcommittee will meet to review residency documentation changes and the kindergarten enrollment cut-off and will report back to the full School Committee for a future vote.
