Fairview Park council approves emergency consent for ODOT bridge deck replacement on West 220th Street

Fairview Park’s city council voted unanimously June 29 to approve Ordinance 2643, authorizing the mayor to give the Ohio Department of Transportation consent for work on the West 220th Street bridge over Interstate 480.

The measure was moved and passed on emergency first reading after Councilman Minnik asked the body to suspend the usual three‑reading rule. Assistant Development Director Megan Otter told the council the project is an ODOT undertaking and that the city itself will not perform the construction. “It is new beams, deck, sidewalks, parapet, and fence for the 220 bridge over 480,” Otter said, adding that ODOT asked the city to sign a consent because the agency wants the city’s name or a notation on the bridge parapet. Otter said the agency needs the signed agreement by the end of July and expects the project to be bid in November, with construction likely to begin early next year.

Council members asked staff clarifying questions about accessibility at the corner near Mastic and whether ramps or other handicap access would be added; Otter said staff would review the plans.

The clerk then called the roll; Councilmembers Lang, Minnik, King, Wearing and Reley voted yes and Ordinance 2643 passed.

The ordinance authorizes the mayor to sign the consent requested by ODOT so the project can proceed on the agency’s schedule.
