The New London Board of Education approved the consent agenda and several policy items at its April 29 meeting.
A motion by President Maynard-Adams (seconded by Danni Cruz) approved the consent agenda, including a budget revision adding $335,524 to the SY24 budget and first readings of Policy 5131.111 (Video Surveillance) and Policy 5141.22 (Communicable/Infectious Diseases). The consent agenda motion carried, 7-0.
Separately, the board approved Policy 6141.31 (Bilingual-English Language Learning Education) for its first reading on a motion by Bryan Doughty, seconded by Ms. Maynard-Adams; Assistant Superintendent Dr. Hills-Papetti told members the policy’s 30-month limit is written in the legislation. That motion carried, 7-0.
On Policy 5114.12 (Student Handbooks), the board approved a motion to adopt the policy with an amendment changing the phrase “The administration” to “Each school administration” to clarify handbook authorship; vote as amended carried 7-0.
On Policy 5134 (Married/Pregnant Students), board members expressed discomfort pairing “married” and “pregnant” in one policy and moved to table it and refer it back to the Policy Committee for revision; that motion carried 7-0.
These votes advance multiple policies to subsequent steps in the district policy process; where the record shows only a first reading, the board did not adopt final policy language at this meeting.
