Policy Committee tables proposed Generative AI policy for further study

The New London Board of Education Policy Committee on April 16, 2024 voted to table a proposed policy on generative artificial intelligence, saying the draft requires more detail before the full Board acts.

Committee member Elaine Maynard-Adams said the draft contains little substantive guidance beyond acknowledging AI's existence; community representative Betsy Perkins agreed. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Hills-Papetti told the committee she has attended webinars on the subject and said "there have been some situations this year" involving both students and staff using AI, prompting members to seek clearer guidance and examples of appropriate use.

Maynard-Adams moved to table Policy 6141.3273/4118.53/4218.53 (Generative AI); Chair Nathan Caron seconded the motion. The motion to table carried by a 4-0 vote. The committee did not set a specific date to revisit the policy and said the Board should return to the topic once members and staff have more information about appropriate educational uses and controls.

The committee's vote to pause consideration leaves in place the proposed language as a draft; any future revisions or a return to the agenda will be brought to the full Board for further discussion and possible adoption.
