The St. John the Baptist Parish School Board elected Debbie Schum as its president and Shawn Wallace as vice president during its regular meeting on Jan. 16, 2025 at West St. John Elementary School.
In the first contested vote for president, Mrs. Debbie Schum received seven votes to Ms. Charo Holden’s four. The roll call showed Holden voting for herself; Burl and Morris voted for Holden; Triche, DeFrancesch, Frizzell, Schum, Mitchell‑Williams, Vicknair and Wallace voted for Schum. After the tally, the chair declared Schum board president.
The board then elected Mr. Shawn Wallace vice president in a separate roll-call vote, 7–4, over Mr. Samuel Mamou. Votes were recorded individually; Wallace and Mamou both voted for themselves in that ballot.
The session opened at 6:00 p.m. with the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance and established a quorum with 11 members present. The board also approved minutes from four December 2024 meetings in a roll-call vote (8 yeas, 3 abstentions).
The leadership changes take effect immediately; Schum, who previously served on the board, will preside over upcoming meetings and oversee committee assignments. The board’s next regular meeting and a planned Jan. 30 workshop—later changed to a meeting to accept an insurance settlement—were announced during the session.
The meeting adjourned at 9:09 p.m. after several members left and the president declared there was no longer a quorum.
