City authorizes tentative 30-day closure of Huron Regional Airport crosswind runway for construction

The city commission voted to authorize a tentative 30-day closure of the crosswind runway at Huron Regional Airport to complete a Federal AIP-funded construction project to add a parallel taxiway.

Commissioner Brag explained the work is the final stretch of a multi-year project to add a parallel taxiway alongside the crosswind runway so aircraft can pull off to the side instead of looping on the runway, improving traffic flow. He said the closure is tentatively scheduled to start July 6 and could be shorter if construction proceeds ahead of schedule. "Realistically, if construction goes well, we're hoping that it's even less than that," Commissioner Brag said.

Staff explained the primary runway (the main runway) will remain open for operations. A staff member identified in the record as Rich described the issuance of a NOTAM (notice to airmen) to inform pilots and users of the temporary restriction and to list any field conditions. "That is a system that would go out to anybody that's flying...we will post this as a notm that 1836 is closed proceed to use 1230," Rich said.

The commission moved and seconded approval of the temporary closure; the motion carried on a roll call. Staff said they would post the NOTAM and notify airport users so businesses that operate from the airstrip can plan around the limited availability of the crosswind runway.
