County staff discuss restoring kennel ceiling brackets and added lighting amid contractor cost discrepancies

County staff and commissioners discussed corrections to kennel construction work during the June 26 meeting, focusing on whether to reinstall ceiling brackets above kennels or use alternate anchoring and how lighting changes affect the plan.

Clay, identifying himself in the discussion, said the credit the county received for removing the over-top brackets was not sufficient to cover the actual cost of the alternate approach and recommended returning to the original plan of four posts to the ceiling on each kennel corner. "The credit we got back wasn't near what we was going to have to pay to have done," Clay said.

Participants noted two new rows of lighting were added and that lighting levels between cells with and without top fencing appeared comparable in a site visit. Staff reported Mark would confirm costs and Adam had a differing estimate; Chelsea was expected to supply another figure. The group discussed a previously mentioned $11,000 credit and whether installing brackets would consume that credit due to additional contractor costs.

No formal vote was taken; staff said they would obtain updated cost estimates from contractors and report back. The discussion also noted potential workflow impacts from gate placements and narrow passage widths in the kennel layout.

The board did not finalize procurement decisions at the meeting.
