Council to review Dexter Cemetery title after county records show church ownership for most parcels

Council members reviewed a county records check that suggested about 75% of the Dexter Cemetery property is recorded to the Dexter Methodist Church rather than the city. The city attorney told the council the office could not positively identify city ownership without further, more expensive research; as a lower‑cost option the attorney suggested the city seek a quitclaim deed from the church to resolve title questions.

Councilmember Diane O’Connor volunteered to search court records for evidence of historic ownership on behalf of both the city and the church. The council did not take formal action to change ownership at the meeting; the matter will require additional documentation or a deed transfer to reach a conclusive outcome.
