Gafford principal says asbestos abatement completed and school 'feels brand new' after renovations

Alan Bridges, principal at Gafford Elementary School, told the board the building underwent major summer renovations after asbestos was removed, calling the reopened school “brand new.”

"As part of the district's ongoing commitment to improving facilities, Gafford underwent major renovations. We had all asbestos safely removed, which required us to completely empty the building," Bridges said, describing replaced classroom and office flooring, new desks and chairs, and new gym and cafeteria floors.

Teachers and staff described the logistical challenge of packing up classrooms for abatement and praised the district's support. One teacher said classrooms had mismatched desks and damaged flooring before the work and that the new furniture is adjustable and more functional for students.

Bridges and staff thanked the superintendent, district facilities staff and custodians for completing the work over the summer; he singled out a custodian who remained through October to ensure the building was ready. Board members noted the upgrades improved morale and visibility for families during events held in renovated spaces.

The presentation was informational; no formal action was taken. The facilities improvements were also referenced during the Finance and Facilities reports as part of a larger summer capital‑projects update.
