PHARR-SAN JUAN-ALAMO ISD holds summer enrollment event with STC and UTRGV to help graduates register

A staff member with PHARR-SAN JUAN-ALAMO ISD said the district hosted a summer enrollment event "with STC and UTRGV representatives to come and assist them with their financial aid questions, with their admissions questions, with their scheduling and actually leave and walk away with a schedule for the fall." The event was presented as a local alternative to traveling to the McAllen campus for late registration.

The scheduled assistance targeted recent PSJA graduates but was open to alumni, district staff said. "We do focus on the students that just recently graduated. However, we're here for any PSJA alumni," the staff member said, adding that the office maintains summer hours and staggers vacations so someone is available to help applicants throughout the summer.

The PSJA staff member said the district typically serves about "50 to 60" students at this event and plans a second session later in the summer to reach students and families who were away on vacation. The services offered by representatives from South Texas College (STC) and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) included help with financial aid forms, admissions guidance and fall-course scheduling so students can complete registration on site.

District staff framed the program as removing obstacles to enrollment: by bringing college advisors to PSJA, students who would otherwise face travel or timing barriers can finalize enrollment steps locally. The staff member noted life circumstances and changing finances can cause students to delay or abandon enrollment plans, and the event is intended to address those barriers.

PSJA representatives encouraged eligible graduates and alumni to visit the district office over the summer for help with applications, financial aid and registration; they emphasized that additional session(s) will be held closer to the start of classes.
