East Lansing committee votes to request annual legal-fees report to council

A citizen financial review committee voted to ask the finance department to provide an annual report to city council summarizing legal costs and settlements, "as legally allowed," citing concern that legal expenses and settlements have mounted in recent years and that some costs may be obscured in indirect allocations.

Motion and vote: A member proposed an amendment requiring an annual report on legal fees and settlement costs; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. After debate about whether to include settlements the committee opted for a formulation that includes settlements where legally permissible and directs the finance department to supply the list to council.
