Peoria County delays enterprise AI policy to clarify governance and employee access

Peoria County postponed consideration of a proposed enterprise artificial‑intelligence usage policy and governance framework to give staff time to address questions about oversight and employee access.

Member Steven Rieker, who presented the operations committee item, said the policy was brought forward by the county CIO and prompted ‘‘a lot of great discussion.’’ Rieker told the board that members raised concerns about how a governance committee would operate and how employees would apply for permission to use AI tools. "The ultimate decision was to postpone this for 30 days, bring it back in July and shore up some of the questions that we had regarding the governance committee and making sure that we didn't disable any current employee from using a tool today that we didn't really have a process to enable them to apply for an AI license through the county," he said.

Rieker said staff will work with the IT department to refine the governance committee structure and an employee licensing process and return the policy to the board next month. The transcript records the postponement and a plan to return in July; no final policy language or vote on substantive policy provisions was adopted at this meeting.
