Elgin Parks & Recreation outlines July events, pool schedule and rec‑center offerings

Regan Anderson said the department will offer family free swim at the start of the month, noting, "July 3rd and July 4th will be family free swim," and outlined a slate of events that includes a "meet the rec team," a field day, a firefighter splash event and an end-of-month block party. Anderson described the month as an opportunity to bring families into downtown and neighborhood parks.

Why it matters: Many of the offerings are free or low-cost and are intended to broaden access to recreation across age groups. Anderson emphasized the department’s effort to keep programs affordable and to provide both seasonal and year-round options.

Pool and lifeguards: Guests said the outdoor pool opened the last weekend in May and will remain open through Aug. 9 (Grace Perez provided the closing-date correction). The pool will be closed on Mondays for maintenance and staff training. Upcoming pool events include a cardboard-boat race and a lifeguard showcase; Anderson noted the lifeguard staff is a mix of experienced returners and new recruits who will mentor first-time guards.

Rec center programs and amenities: The rec center offers day passes and memberships, a weight room, a gym for basketball, pickleball and volleyball, Wildcat Walkers (an indoor lap/obstacle walking course), aerobics classes and other year-round programming. Anderson encouraged residents to check the city’s Parks & Recreation webpages for membership and scheduling details.

Parks and activities: Anderson highlighted several parks popular with families: Veterans Memorial (downtown, with a train playscape), Thomas Memorial (referred to by staff as "Purple Park"), Morris Memorial (behind Fleming Community Center, adjacent to the pool, with a playscape, basketball court, pond and walking trail) and Elgin Memorial Park behind the rec center. Guests noted catch-and-release fishing at Morris and said the rec center rents equipment such as basketballs, pickleball gear, washers and horseshoes.

Safety and timing: Skate nights will continue but may be canceled during extreme heat to avoid heat-related illness. Anderson said the department plans an astronomy night in the fall when viewing conditions are better.

Operations and costs: Concessions at the pool will offer snacks priced generally from $1 to $3, some items up to $4, and essentials such as sunscreen or towels priced roughly $6–$10. The pool will accept cash and mobile Square payments.
