IT advisory commission adopts May minutes, hears FCC update and schedules July meeting

The Information Technology Advisory Commission approved the minutes for May and received routine legislative and logistical updates at its June 2026 meeting.

The chair asked for comments on the May minutes and, with no substantive edits offered, a motion to adopt the minutes was made and seconded. One participant said, "I abstain since I was not there," and the minutes were adopted by voice. During the legislative update, the commission was told the Federal Communications Commission will consider a notice of proposed rulemaking on whether state or local laws that inhibit broadband buildout could be preempted under section 253 of the Communications Act, and a separate proceeding to modernize emergency alert systems (EAS/WEA) that would include cybersecurity measures. The chair also reported news that AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced a joint arrangement to share spectrum resources for satellite-enabled broadband to reduce wireless dead zones.

Members discussed efforts to arrange a tour of the data center the county uses but said legal/public-meeting constraints and secure facility rules complicate an in-person public tour; staff will check with the county attorney and consider a briefing at a staff meeting as an alternative.

Members confirmed a virtual meeting next week, noted there will be no meeting in August and set July 22 for the next regular meeting. A member moved to adjourn, was seconded and the motion carried.
