Wyoming City school board hears progress on new primary schools, approves builder's-risk insurance for Elm

Wyoming City Schools board members heard a detailed construction update on the district’s three new primary schools and voted to approve a facilities recommendation that includes procuring builder’s-risk insurance for the Elm project.

A facilities committee presenter told the board the Hilltop Primary School building pad is complete, storm-water infrastructure and foundations are under construction, and crews have started pouring concrete and raising wall sections. "You can actually start to see the outline of Hilltop Primary School now," the presenter said, adding that plumbing and electrical work beneath the slab are expected to start soon and that vertical framing could begin in July.

The presenter said Elm’s contents have been moved to the Presbyterian Church of Wyoming and Elm is closed ahead of demolition. Demolition was described as expected to take about three to five weeks, after which the site will be prepped for the same sequence of work seen at Hilltop. The presenter also noted Vermont recently completed its third and final community design workshop.

The board discussed bringing community members to view active work "just outside the fence" and possibly incorporating students into site visits once framing begins. The facilities recommendation presented to the board included a request to obtain builder’s-risk insurance for Elm; staff said the district followed the same process it used for Hilltop and will repeat it for Vermont.

The motion to approve the facilities recommendation, including the insurance procurement, passed on a roll-call vote as read by the chair.

What happens next: staff will coordinate the announced community-engagement opportunities and move forward with Elm demolition and the insurance procurement process as part of the Elm construction contract sequence.
