Treasurer: Cherokee Nation submits federal single audit and earns triple-crown recognition

Treasurer Taylor told the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council on Monday that the tribe's finance team completed two days of financial-resources training at Chota Center and that staff submitted the tribe's federal single audit to the Federal Audit Clearinghouse on schedule.

"We have 190 federal awards that we are managing each year," Taylor said, adding that the audit submission deadline was June 30 and that the tribe filed on time. Taylor said the finance office routinely works with tribal workforce staff to improve submission and reconciliation processes under a theme this year of "you've got a friend in finance."

Taylor also said the tribe received a Triple Crown Award for FY24, an honor given by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) to governments that meet three financial-reporting standards: the annual budget, the comprehensive annual financial report or audit, and a popular annual financial report. "I'm very proud of my team for consistently turning out top quality award-winning work," Taylor said.

Taylor told council members that the auditors will join the council in August to review the single audit, describe their findings and answer questions. No follow-up questions were raised at Monday's meeting.

The report also noted that some other tribes fall behind in federal audit submissions; Taylor said the Cherokee Nation consistently files on time. The council did not take any formal action related to the audit at the meeting.
