Shade Tree Commission maps fall planting, Miwaki forest pilot and maintenance needs

Commissioners reviewed spring planting outcomes and discussed plans for fall plantings, park projects and a Miwaki forest pilot.

Members said spring plantings at playgrounds experienced some damage and recommended coordinated fencing or stronger protection at installation. The commission plans to seek a mix of potted nursery stock and some bare‑root material to balance delivery timing, survival rates and handling capacity.

Volunteers and tree tenders described a Miwaki forest pilot: a dense, mixed‑species planting on roughly 220 square yards of Nailers Run Park where they would install up to 800 seedlings in a succession arrangement and provide three years’ maintenance if the township provides temporary fencing and auger support for post holes. Commissioners agreed to pursue cooperation with public works for auguring and temporary deer fencing and to explore mayoral support for the project.

Commissioners also reviewed species selections for Walnut Street Park (including London plane, redbud and inkberry) and agreed to follow up on replacement requests for trees that died on Westchester Pike. The commission signaled it will coordinate details and scheduling with public works and provide fall planting priorities at the next meeting.
