Committee advances 'Sasquatch Park' name for community park next to Central Recreation Center

The Parks, Foundations and Quality of Life Policy Committee voted to forward a staff naming recommendation — "Sasquatch Park" — for the new community park adjacent to the Central Recreation Center to city council.

Staff planner Scott Hammonds described the naming process and public outreach that led to the recommendation. "We compiled close to 50 names and narrowed it down to 10," he said, and the finalists were tested with students at Vasser Elementary and the general public. "Sasquatch Park won the poll," Hammonds added, describing the selection as inspired by mountain folklore and intended to encourage children to explore nature.

The committee briefly discussed the choice. Council Member Medina said the community had produced "a good name" and Council Member Hancock noted it would be enjoyable for families and young users. When staff asked whether the committee would advance the recommendation to city council, two members said yes and the item was moved forward for council consideration.

The naming policy staff cited prohibits naming parks for an individual; staff confirmed the top selections met that requirement. Staff did not present an implementation timeline or a formal council hearing date; the committee's action was to refer the naming recommendation to the full city council for final approval.

What's next: the name will appear on the agenda for city council consideration; staff will follow the council's direction about formal adoption and signage plans.
