The Tacoma School District Board of Directors opened its business meeting by honoring local partners and student athletic achievements.
Amanda Scott Thomas, director of the community partnership office, presented the June Shining Star Community Partner Award to the Technology Access Foundation (TAF) team working at Bose Elementary and other Tacoma schools. She highlighted TAF's role in expanding access to STEM and STEAM programming, providing professional development and coaching, and supporting project-based learning in preK'fifth grade classrooms.
TAF representatives thanked the district for a 12-year partnership and mentioned collaboration with the district's Teach 253 program to recruit and train new teachers.
The board also recognized several student athletic achievements: Silus High School junior Savannah Hinton for winning two individual state hurdle titles (100m hurdles time listed in the record as 14.55 seconds and a 300m hurdles meet record at 41.73 seconds) and Lincoln High School senior Eddie Brunner Jr. as the 2026 WIAA 3A boys 400m state champion and three-time state champion. Lincoln's boys 4x100 relay team (Emanuel Jordan, Eddie Brunner Jr., Casey Williams, Ramon Jones) was honored as back-to-back 3A state champions and school record holders.
Coaches and students spoke briefly about character development, teamwork and gratitude to coaches and families; families and supporters joined honorees for photo opportunities.
