Commission highlights Youth & Law forums and READ campaign; calls for volunteers

Panelists from across Washington described Youth & Law forums that engage middle- and high-school students with mock trials, panels, career fairs and community partnerships.

"We had 200 plus apply," Lisa Castilleja said of the Tri-Cities forum, highlighting strong youth interest and the logistical work needed to recruit volunteers and coordinate schools. Andre Pinolvera summarized Pierce County's model, noting 110 youth and 75 adults attended its most recent event and that organizers prioritize culturally relevant venues and partnerships with community organizations and food banks.

Bonnie Glenn described King County's long-running program (35 years) and outlined how volunteer judges, lawyers and community partners run workshops, mock trials and career outreach. Presenters urged commissioners to travel, volunteer and help sponsor local events.

Separately, Wanda Barrett reported that the READ campaign has 2,026 books ready for distribution to 261 schools; volunteers were asked to help label, box and ship materials from the Temple of Justice.

The commission acknowledged the outreach work as central to its mission of connecting youth with the justice system and instructed staff to continue supporting these events; several commissioners volunteered to attend upcoming forums, including Kitsap's event on October 17.
