Davenport council postpones vote on fire department standards of cover to July

The Davenport City Council on June 24 postponed action on a resolution approving the Fire Department's standards of cover for its 2026 accreditation cycle, voting to table the item for one meeting cycle.

Alderwoman Newton said she had concerns raised about the document and had not yet been able to vet them with the chief; she requested a short postponement so council members could review details. The Fire Chief told the council that delaying for two cycles would be the maximum practical postponement and that the department's accreditation hearing is scheduled in August, with deferral potentially resulting in a delay of six months to a year in reaccreditation if issues are not addressed.

Alderman Rick Dunn moved to postpone the matter for one cycle (July); the motion received a second and passed on a roll call with the members present voting in favor. Several council members said they would continue discussions with the chief in the interim and that the item could be revisited at the next meeting or tabled further if necessary.

Next steps: council will revisit the standards of cover at the July meeting; staff and the Fire Chief will work with interested council members to address outstanding concerns before that date.
