The Worcester License Commission issued a formal warning to Mexicali Grill (225 Shrewsbury Street) after a police compliance inspection found gaps in required server training and a prior on-premises disturbance.
Officer Patrick Harrington summarized the department's report: on May 15, 2026, units from Fire, Code and Alcohol Enforcement conducted a compliance check at Mexicali Grill and, after reviewing a social-media video of an earlier fight, found two employees lacked the required TIP (server) certification and the premises did not keep the required TIP training records. Police advised staff to stop alcohol sales that evening and informed the business it would receive a violation.
A representative for the licensee acknowledged that records were not immediately available on the day of the check and disputed limited characterizations of job duties (describing one individual as a "barback" rather than a bartender) but did not contest the commission's finding that required TIP documentation was absent that night. The commission noted it was the establishment's first recorded violation and moved, by vote, to issue a warning rather than a suspension.
Officer Harrington reminded the owner that any breach of the peace on the premises must be reported to police under commission rules. The commission advised the licensee to maintain TIP certification files on site and ensure all employees who handle alcohol complete the approved training within required timeframes.
