Commission members reviewed a communications platform under consideration to centralize announcements, events and weather-related updates for seniors, the commission chair said at the June 24 meeting.
Phil Anderson, the meeting’s guest speaker, described the platform’s design and practical goal: allow organizations and facilities to post their own notices so information is shared from the source rather than being re-hosted by the city. “It becomes more of a hub, rather than a sector of the community,” Anderson said, arguing the approach would connect housing, transportation and service providers through shared information flows.
Under the platform model discussed, individual organizations would own and publish their information (class schedules, cancellations, weather-related notices) and that information would be distributed across channels; the commission plans further discussions and stakeholder engagement before recommending adoption or integration with the city website.
Next steps: The chair said they will continue discussions with the vendor and bring the platform back to the commission with more stakeholder input and demonstrations. No procurement or integration decisions were made at the meeting.
Context: The platform discussion ties into the commission’s broader AARP-aligned action plan, which emphasizes communications and outreach as a key enabler for program effectiveness.
