Commission schedules briefings on drought, geoduck science and app training after public comment

During the meeting debrief, Deputy Director Windrop summarized themes from public comment and proposed follow‑up steps. He listed concerns about the timeliness of hunting regulations, requests for a letter to the Pacific Salmon Commission, disabled‑hunter opportunities, uncertainty around geoduck science, a suggestion for a hunter workshop on the department app, and public requests for drought information.

Commissioners agreed staff should provide briefings and coordinate committee work. Chair Anderson and Deputy Director Windrop said the director would work with program staff and that some items should appear in the August director’s report. “A briefing on drought, we can talk at the director's report in August,” the deputy director said. Commissioners asked that app training be made available in multiple formats including short 'how‑to' videos to help residents adapt to new digital tools.

The wildlife committee will take up cougars in September (to discuss the 2025 season, conflict removals and hunting impacts), and staff were asked to report on geoduck science and the department’s current web resources about drought impacts to fish and wildlife. ADAC (the department advisory committee referenced in the meeting) was asked to consider more regular reporting or scheduled appearances to improve commission connection.
