Cañon City panel approves 2027 preservation budget including training and outreach funds

The Cañon City Historic Preservation Commission voted June 24 to approve its proposed 2027 historic preservation budget, which includes funds for training, attendance at preservation conferences and interpretive and outreach materials.

Lisa, the commission’s staff representative, said the budget covers registration and travel for one individual to attend statewide conferences, potential speaker fees for local presentations, and supplies for printed walking tours and banners. “This will also include travel and accommodations or at least some” support for attending conferences, Lisa said, adding the commission will attempt to apply for scholarships but is not guaranteed funding.

Commissioners pressed staff on timing and amendment options. Lisa told the commission the finance department requires the proposed budget by July 17 so it can be reviewed and included in the city’s proposed budget to council. She also clarified the city fiscal year runs Jan. 1–Dec. 31, so hosting an event in 2028 would normally be budgeted in the 2028 cycle rather than carried forward.

After discussion, the commission approved the proposed 2027 budget. The chair announced the motion passed; the transcript records the outcome as “motion passed unan.” and later “motion passed by majority.”

Next steps: staff will file the proposed budget with the finance department by the July 17 deadline and commissioners said they will pursue possible supplemental funding from the city or external partners if a Saving Places hosting opportunity emerges.
