Villa Park rec commission previews July events, summer programs and membership data request

The Villa Park Recreation Commission reviewed summer events and operational updates, confirming a July 7 evening entertainment event at Lufkin Park, an August 8 sports swap with donations accepted the evening prior, and multiple summer programs while asking staff to provide membership and pass figures at the next meeting.

John Dorhower, who led the commission’s report on the Lufkin Park family entertainment series, said the first event earlier this month had a strong turnout and encouraged commissioners and residents to promote the next event, a karaoke evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on July 7. Food vendors scheduled for the July event include Jesse's Gelato and Joe's Heavenly Hot Dogs. Commissioners and village communications staff will post promotional images and share the event on social media.

Staff provided a schedule and participation numbers for summer programming: adventure day camp averages about 45 attendees per day, junior-adventure about 42 per day and the mini program about 16 per day. Swim programming is underway with staff training completed and lessons scheduled to resume in early July after a brief weather-related hiatus. Summer basketball has about 75 registrants; soccer camp is scheduled July 20–24; a pickleball tournament is set for July 11 and a three-on-three basketball tournament for July 18. Staff also reported that a recent theater production at Willoughbrook High School drew roughly 120 people per night and a fishing derby had roughly 95 participants.

Administrative items: commissioners asked staff to collect pool-pass and membership numbers (including response to a prorated July 11 membership) and to bring those figures to the next commission meeting. Villa Park Go Green offered volunteer support for the sports swap and other events.

The commission adjourned after the announcements; no votes beyond the minutes approval and adjournment were taken.
