Council approves $55,792 police cruiser purchase with county grant support

The Bethany Beach Town Council voted to purchase a 2026 Chevrolet for the police department at a retail price of $55,792.

Town staff explained that the police vehicle cost is largely covered by a Sussex County grant of $45,000 targeted for local law enforcement. Council members said a $14,000 carryover from a previous budget will cover the remaining vehicle purchase amount; equipment outfitting for the vehicle (noted separately) is budgeted at approximately $25,000.

The purchase had been discussed at budget committee meetings and staff presented quotes from fleet services; the low bidder was identified as Herrick at the stated retail price. Council moved, seconded and approved the purchase by voice vote.

Council and staff noted that while some grant and carryover funds are in place for the vehicle, equipment costs (lights, radios, and other outfitting) will be paid from remaining budgeted funds. The council did not record individual roll-call tallies in the transcript.
