Commission explores 3D-scanning, drone imaging and time-lapse to document restoration

During the meeting members explored options to document the restoration and to produce outreach content. The commission discussed partnering with Cape Cod Makers for 3D scanning and reproduction of the academy’s weather vane and other architectural elements, and the possibility of seeking grants that support digital preservation.

Members also discussed LiDAR or photogrammetry via drone to capture the building’s existing conditions and repeated suggestions to set up time-lapse cameras to illustrate work progress. The chair noted liability concerns and contractor preferences about being recorded and suggested seeking contractor consent before any continuous on-site recording; the group proposed alternatives such as scheduled still photos or daily time-lapse captures when crews are not actively present.

The commission agreed to refine a public letter and coordinate with the town Chronicle for publicity. Members also raised a speculative idea to request deconstructed pieces of the Sagamore bridge from the Army Corps for possible reuse as interpretive or functional features, noting hazardous-material and logistical issues would require further investigation.

The meeting concluded without substantive votes on the documentation approach; members directed staff to explore camera costs, contractor willingness to be filmed, and grant possibilities for digital preservation.
