Casey Rimmer, executive director of curriculum and instruction for Union County Public Schools, presented required revisions to the district's beginning teacher support plan at the June 24 Curriculum Committee meeting and said the updates were intended to reduce paperwork and provide clearer mentor and professional-development supports for teachers in their first three years.
"One of the most rewarding parts of my work is partnering with our beginning teachers and the incredible educators that support them," Rimmer said, describing a mentor network, targeted professional development and ongoing guidance from the beginning-teacher support team. She said the revisions were intended to ensure compliance with North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requirements while simplifying processes to keep new teachers from feeling overwhelmed.
Committee members asked whether veteran teachers receive parallel supports; Rimmer said curriculum facilitators and other district teams provide ongoing support to experienced staff and that the beginning-teacher plan complements those efforts. A committee member noted improved retention data for beginning teachers, which the presenter said the program aims to sustain.
The committee moved and voted (3-0) to forward the revised plan to the full board for approval. Staff indicated the item will appear on a future full-board agenda for a final vote.
