Police Chief Enrew introduced Sergeant Scott Manor at the June 22 South Lyon council meeting and told the council the department is actively recruiting for one open officer position. Sergeant Manor, on the job in South Lyon for about two months, described his 29 years at the Howell Police Department and recent part‑time work with Metro Parks.
Manor recounted a recent on‑duty incident in which he located a stolen occupied vehicle while patrolling near Millennium Middle School and said that, although the vehicle owner declined prosecution, officers issued curfew citations. Speaking about staffing, Manor said recruitment and retention remain difficult: "Nobody wants to be cops anymore," he said, describing recruitment as one of the chief challenges the force faces.
On technology, Manor said drone units have proven useful for recoveries and evidence and that agencies have used drones to assist in locating missing elderly residents. He also discussed body cameras: he said he initially hesitated because of data retention costs but moved forward once systems became affordable, and that cameras often protect officers from false complaints as much as they gather evidence.
The council offered Manor a public welcome; no personnel actions were taken at the meeting. City officials said recruitment efforts continue and that the department is incorporating technology (drones, in‑car cameras and body cameras) while prioritizing officer safety and retention.
