Daisy Girl Scout Troop 60275 presented a proposal to the Williamstown ordinance committee for a multi-year community rock garden to be located in the field to the right of the Feifer Center.
"Our troop is very community service-oriented," said Crystal, a Girl Scout leader, outlining plans by the 12-girl troop (kindergarten and first grade) to clear weeds, lay tarp to inhibit regrowth, paint a perimeter, place hand-painted rocks and use larger stones for edging. Leaders said the first-year work focuses on site preparation and painted rocks; future additions could include benches, a decorative water feature and a free mini-library.
Council members asked about cost and donations. The troop said manpower is the primary expense and that it is accepting donations. One official offered to have the town post information on its social media pages to help solicit support; the troop thanked officials for the offer. A council member also suggested troop organizers connect with staff (assistant Michelle) to facilitate donation coordination.
Leaders said the project would provide community amenities near the new playground at the Feifer Center and offer skill-building and badge-earning opportunities for the girls. "We'll be maintaining the area in the circle as well," Crystal added.
The presentation concluded with council members thanking the girls and their leaders for bringing the proposal before the committee. No formal vote on use of the site was recorded at the ordinance committee meeting; the committee resumed review of ordinances after the presentation.
